KAYAK SAFETY CLINIC

COST: M $14  NM $28

Must be a minimum 10 years of age. There is a maximum 8 participants per class. Clinic is designed for beginner to intermediate kayakers. Participants will get a chance to see skill demonstrations and to practice what they've learned in a safe environment with experienced staff.  Kayaks and flotation devices will be available for use on the day of the clinic. Participants need only bring swim suit and towel. Those wishing to participate should be able to swim and comfortable with water up to 7 ft deep. KAYAK SKILLS CLASS - STARTING APRIL 1ST

COST: M $20  NM $40

For those graduates of the YMCA Kayak Safety Clinic. Anytime between April and October. Contact Bob to reserve a time at 248-5019.

 

SNORKEL ADVENTURE CLINIC

Must be a minimum of 12 years of age. Clinic is designed for beginner to intermediates. Participants will have the opportunity to test their skills in the water at the YMCA. A mask and snorkel are required for the class. Maximum of 12 participants—waiting list will become available when this clinic is full. Those wishing to participate must be avid swimmers.

 

ADULT Aquatic Personal Safety and Survival Course - Classroom and Water Settings

Course is designed to educate adults with the basics of an ’what to do’ in an aquatic environment. Ideal for those who work in child care, have backyard pools or visit public pools regularly. Topics consist of but not limited to causes of water accidents, preventive measures for aquatic accidents, how to increase personal safety and survival, proper use of PFD, perform water skills and nonswimming rescues. Allows participants ability to react to accidents after the fact, on moral principle only, with general training and no special equipment.

 

SWIMMER STROKE TECHNIQUE CLASS

This program is designed for adults who would like to improve their swimming technique and form, as well as develop endurance and physical fitness. The class is designed to be a non-competitive environment where the focus will be placed on your stroke technique and lap swimming abilities. Swim instructors will be available to provide you with a swim workout that meets your current abilities, as well as with tips and techniques to improve your stroke. *Participants must be able to swim a minimum of 50 yards without stopping. Goggles are required and caps are highly recommended. Please wear appropriate attire—no bikinis or mesh shorts.

YOUTH H20 SAFETY AND SURVIVAL

Two days, approximately 1 ½ hours classroom followed by 1 ½ hours of pool time.

Boys and Girls  -  Ages 11-14

 *Participants must be able to swim one full length of pool and be comfortable in water up to 7 ft. deep

Course material will consist of participants at completion be able to identify causes of water accidents, identify preventive measures, identify methods to help increase your own personal safety, demonstrate PFDs, perform resting stroke, HELP positions, treading water and nonswimming assists.

 

JR. LIFEGUARD PROGRAM

Six days, approximately 2 ½ hours classroom followed by 1 hour of additional pool time.

Boys and Girls

Ages 14-15

Includes manual plus YMCA National Certification, t-shirt, lanyard and whistle.

 

*Ability to swim 100 yards any stroke, tread 2 minutes (legs only), surface dive (head-first and feet-first), as well as strength and maturity to assist in backboarding procedures. Full participation is required, successful completion of written test and water test.

 

The course trains and certifies individuals in the YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant program. This course presents the knowledge and skills needed to both help prevent and recognize aquatic risks, and to assist a lifeguard in the emergency response to an accident or injury. This training does not provide participants with lifeguard training and there must be a currently certified lifeguard on duty with the Jr. Certified. Participants will be required to volunteer at least two hours back to the pool and have the opportunity to continue as a volunteer Jr. Guard at the YMCA pool until ready to take full Lifeguard certification. 

 

Participants in this course at 14 who would want to become lifeguards at 16 will need to complete the Lifeguard Crossover Course.
