YMCA Lifeguard Recertification

Participants must currently possess a YMCA lifeguarding certification, with expiration of within 30 days. Participants will complete written exam, scoring 80% per section and retest on all water skills. A valid First Aid, CPR, AED and Oxygen certification is required.
To become a YMCA lifeguard, you must meet the following entrance requirements, complete the course as described, gain medical clearance and fulfill all certification requirements. Participants must complete a written exam, scoring at least 80% per section and be able to show all water skills by end of course. A high level of maturity and responsibility is needed.
PREREQ: (completed prior to start of course) Pass the following swim test: Perform a long, shallow front dive, swim 500 yards, including 100 yards each of: sidestroke, front crawl, breaststroke, sidestroke kick with one arm forward, and inverted breaststroke kick with arms on the stomach. Tread water for at least two minutes with legs only. Surface dive head first and feet first and swim underwater for 15 feet. The YMCA pool is 25 yds. Therefore, 4 lengths must be swam of each stroke. A total of 20 lengths completed for 500 yds. It is recommended that those wishing to take the course begin practicing prior to start of course. (Those unable to complete the tasks listed above will be excused prior to start of class).
All Participants must be at least 16 years of age prior to the start date of the course.
Please Note: FIRST AID, CPR, AED and OXYGEN are not included in this course. Participants are required to get this additional training to become certified as a YMCA lifeguard.
Participants are expected to get in the water each and everyday. Two piece suits are unacceptable. Goggles are not required.
Mandatory Attendance is required for all days.
